As long at the roof cross bars are designed for your car, go ahead and use them, or get some that do. I would not suggest just strapping to the roof, as they are very likely to end up on the highway! Get some good straps to secure the luggage, strong rope will do the job just as well too, but do not use parcel string, as it will break to easily.
